Operations & Programs Manager

About The Role:

The Hoboken Shelter is looking for a dynamic and reliable individual to oversee our operations and programming which operates 365 days per year. We shelter 50 people nightly, serve 530 meals daily, and provide support services such as case management, counseling, job & life skills training, creative arts workshops, emergency homelessness prevention grants, and permanent supportive housing solutions.

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Shelter, this person manages the day-to-day functions of the Shelter, including guest programming, staffing, and facilities. We are looking for someone who enjoys wearing multiple hats and has the ability to balance competing priorities. The ideal candidate will have previous people management and strong communications skills. Prior experience with homeless services is a must.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Supervise 20 staff members (case managers, overnight staff and kitchen staff). Manage employee schedules, run staff meetings, develop and train staff as well as cover for employee absences.
    • Be responsible for inspections, audits and records for local, state, and federal agencies, with HUD being one example.
    • Manage existing programs and evolve programming for Shelter guests. Oversee guest development workshops, the homelessness prevention program and 32 units of permanent supportive housing.
    • Manage supplies to feed 500+ individuals daily and house 50+ individuals nightly.
    • Oversee Maintenance of the Facilities.
    • Provide monthly program reports to the Executive Director and regularly updates to the Board of Trustees.


    • B.A or B.S. preferred, MSW/CSW or LCSW degree a plus.
    • CADC/LCADC/CASAC a plus.
    • Experience working directly with the homeless in a shelter environment.
    • Experience supervising and scheduling staff.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficiency in current office productivity applications, like Microsoft Office and/or GSuite.
    • Supply management experience.
    • Experience with HMIS a plus.
    • Bilingual a plus.

Key Skills:

    • Comfort with a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
    • Self-Starter. The Executive Director will set your goals but it is up to you to execute.
    • Able to forge strong connections with external entities, such as the county-level homelessness task forces.
    • Able to attend meetings, transfer knowledge to staff and do on the job training.
    • Experience with and passion for homeless services.

Full-time, 40 Hours/Week with Flexible Schedule with some Evenings & Weekends required.

Salary: $52,000. Benefits available.

Development Assistant

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct administrative support to the Executive Director.
  • Prepare timely recognition of all donors & volunteers — thank you letters & certificates of appreciation.
  • Maintain volunteer/donor databases (data entry) to manage donor relationships — GiftWorks & Excel.
  • Produce newsletter mailings.
  • Manage marketing materials & press files.
  • Assist with Volunteers.
  • Cultivate restaurants and in-kind donations.
  • Maintain donation jars solicitation.
  • Process donations & matching gift forms.
  • Support Fundraising Events
  • Represent the organization professionally at appropriate public functions & fundraisers, including making presentations.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Shift & Hours: Tuesday – Wednesday – Thursday, 12noon to 8pm – 24 hours a week.

Salary: $14.00/hour
